Love

is the most vital ingredient of our life.

Without Love, Life will be a Big zero and meaningless. Love helps to iron out our problems. All Religions also exist to nourish the spread and growth of love among us.

Love generally refers to the affection and association for anything.

Many of us love our family, friends and neighbors.

Some are strange to love animals and some others love flowers ...so on and so forth.

The love among the community members is fostered by the common purpose also. One such case is narrated below.

Life in Kerala

A Cooperative Society  for Death Expenses called as Cooperative Society for Death Relief needs (Marana Avsya Sahakarana Sangham in Malayalam)

Strange , you may think, but it's true.

Life is made simple and easy for the poor people in small villages of Coastal Kerala .

Whenever somebody died in a family, the family will approach the Cooperative for Death expenses  in the area. This society will  provide a decent sum of money to help the bereaved family to do the last rites for the departed soul.

The origin of  novel idea of setting up of Cooperatives for Death expenses is not known. But the local inquiry puts the origin dating back to the 1970s when the first of such society was formed in a village in Ernakulam district of Kerala. Sole purpose of the society is to help out the poor people like casual laborers, hawkers, fisherman; who cannot raise money to meet the emergent expenses. Purely the object is of humanitarian nature. Normally , the assistance of Rs.5000/- is provided .

The society is formed with Bye laws and to be registered with the Registrar of Cooperatives, Govt of Kerala. It is administered by a set of members elected from the General Body meeting held once in a year.

About 300-400 families in a village constitute the members of the society and each family should pay a monthly subscription of Rs.50 or more depending on the location and size of the society. The subscription to the fund will be continuous by one person of each family after availing the fund for earlier occasion.

The funds collected by the society are held in the savings bank account of a bank in that locality.
Accounts are to be audited every year and report to be submitted to the Govt Authority. But the role of Government is none to report .

The society also takes loans from banks for acquiring tents, chairs, tables, etc... These items would be rented out at nominal sum to those who need these items for the death ceremony. The income by way of hiring charges and subscription by members would be utilized for repaying the loan. Generally, the conduct of such society is satisfactory as long as managed properly.

Such societies enable, sustain and enrich the human relationships as members are from varied cultural and religious groups. Big contributions as donations are also received from the affluent people in the society. It serves a means of equalizer status when it comes to the end of an individual’s life.
